Burda 09-2006-115 Wrap Dress

bwof_0906_115_1
Look, no snow on my back deck!!!
My husband is putting the final touches on our deck. He started working on it last summer but the building season is short and the winter is looooong. He'll finish it once the weather gets a bit warmer. In this picture it's 38 degrees and it's 45 degrees right now. This is shorts weather in Alaska, baby!!

Here is BWOF 09-2006 #115. Yes, I'm very late getting on this bandwagon. Everyone is off this wrap-dress-wagon now but I still love the wrap dress. Here it looks very springy with my sandals but it would look nice with my brown leather boots too.

Here you can see how full the skirt is. The overlap on the fronts is really wide so there is little chance of exposure. This fabric is from JoAnn's (yes, I was surprised too) and it's a rayon/lycra 4-way stretch knit. It's super comfortable and cuddly. The front panel kind of stick together so that coupled with the overlap makes chance of exposure really low.

This is the true wrap dress so the ties go all the way around the back and tie in the front.

The original pattern has you use facings turned to the inside. Instead, I attached the front to elastic with my serger . . . .

. . . and folded the fabric over the elastic where I then stitched it down with my three-step zigzag stitch. It's hard to see on this fabric.

Here's a horribly bad overlay to show you the stitches.

Here's an equally bad overlay to show you the details. I actually really like this color combination. I will probably try making this dress again (using a different fabric) and add a contrast binding to the edges. This time I just used my coverstitch machine for the side edges and the bottom hem.

I think I'll wear this tomorrow. Well, assuming it's still this warm.

Great dress, I almost bought that fabric! It looks great on you, and forget the bandwagon... if it looks good, it's in style! Hope the "heatwave" continues!

Love the shape of that wrap dress - I've been keeping an eye out for the perfect pattern, but all the ones I've found seem to be too full in the skirt. This one looks just right :-) Might have to track down a copy of that BWOF.

The dress looks great and so does your deck.

Great wrap dress - I don't have that issue but will keep an eye out for it. Just checked the conversion for the temperature our temperature is a whole lot warmer than yours but I still have a cardigan on today! (it is Autumn here after all!)

Love the dress. yet another great job!

Hi Dawn. The dress looks really great on you. Curious as to why you wouldn't have used the coverstitch machine on the neckline. I covet a coverstitch machine and imagine that I would have used it here. Thanks.

Cute dress. Brrrr on the temps though, coming from this Florida girl. Ditto to Elbee's Q on why you didn't coverstitch the neckline. Old habits? ;-)

Wrap dresses don't go out of style. This one is reall cute and looks very nice on you.

You are great doing dresses and other stuff, but I think you could give a better style to you dress by using other kind of shoes. Those wedge shoes do no justice. Try wearing another kind of heel sandals because the dress looks dressy and the sandals you are wearing are too casual.

Love it! And I think this and the sandals are perfect for a day of summer shopping. We lost our last bit of snow about a week ago. Spring will come!

You look great in that dress. I like the neckline- not to low for work.

I agree with earlier comment, wraps never go out of style. They are always ready to throw on. Look at vintage patterns and they are always there, regardless of the year, you always find one or two.

That's a very pretty dress. Thanks for highlighting the pattern; I have yet to make a real wrap dress (made a faux wrap once). Also, I think the wrap dress is a classic and never out of style!

I love the dress and the pattern. How do you draw on your pictures? I have tried to do that, but I can't figure it out.

What is better than a wrap dress or shirt? This dress is wonderful and looks lovely on you. Now I'm just sorry that it's an old Burda issue and that I don't have it. it's exactly the kind of dress I would like to have, trendy or not.

This is a wonderful pattern Dawn!
I've made this dress 4 time already. Two with sleeves and two sleeveless.

Love that dress! It looks really cute on you.

Hooray!

I do have this fabric and have a wrap blouse planned. Good to know that it works well.

Time to start playing with the 'pretend it's a serger' stitches.

What a gorgeous dress for you. Fits your more than perfect.

Just read about your "heatwave". Here it's also very hot for april's time. Good time to get starting with having barbecues.

I have no memory of this pattern! That's probably because even I am not grading up from a 40. 42 is my limit. It looks so pretty and spring-y too. I love the ties in front, especially.

Really cute dress, and I love the fabric print AND color!
I consider wrap dresses a classic, and hope they never go out of style. I've liked them ever since DVF "invented" them!
And about those temps - we're supposed to hit 100 tomorrow - had to turn the A/C on today! Aaaaargh! I really fight turning it on before May 1st! And to think DH had the heat on a few days ago!!!
On a side note, dd's best friend is in school up there (on a v-ball scholarship) and she's very excited to be coming home in two weeks, to enjoy some sun (as my dd puts it) lol!

Wow, that wrap dress is gorgeous! It fits you perfectly and the colors are beautiful on you. Thanks for the idea on the elastic instead of facings. I found your blog through Patternreview (I'm RobinMCPA on there) and have added you to my blogroll.

Very interesting on the elastic. I'm wearing a knit wrap dress right now that I made and just eliminated the facings altogether. Just turned the edge under and topstitched. But the elastic is a good idea as well. Did you do that to prevent gape or eliminate gape if the knit tends to stretch over time? What were your thoughts on this?
