Fit? Love it. Fitted without being too fitted.
Length? Love it.
Princess seaming? Love it.
Shoulder/sleeve dart? Turned out really well.
Wool crepe? Love working with it.
Color? HATE IT. HATE IT. HATE IT.
I think this one is a wadder. I'm not going to do anything with it yet but what do you ya'll think? I added different belts to see if that helped with the blah factor. I put on colored tights so my whole body was not one huge khaki creation. The black fuzzy at the arm is the lining. I haven't hemmed it yet.

Purple looks bad. One problem is I can't figure out whether this is a brown or a grey. Do I wear brown shoes or black ones? I have a rule about wearing brown shoes with black/grey things and vice versa. In these pictures it looks khaki brown.
Lower or higher belt?
Solid colored belt or patterned belt like this one? I don't like any of the options!!!
I need color around my face but, as a science teacher, I don't wear scarves or big necklaces. Too many opportunites to catch on fire. What sort of non-frilly colorful embellishment can I add? I was recently reading Lindsey T's blog and her trim shopping. I wish . . .

If you're having trouble deciding if it's gray or beige, it's probably taupe, which is, interestingly enough, gray-beige. That being the case, you could wear it with either black or brown, but it would depend on how you accessorize. With that floral belt, for example, I would wear brown.
Then again, it's not really like I'm a fashion oracle.
Agree with Paula, not a wadder.Great fit, good pattern for you, so why throw it away? Perhaps a necklace with bold, large beads?

ReplyDeleteI would say boots and a long-beaded necklace, but the necklace isn't an option for you. Hmmm...maybe a nice jacket? Thinking a cropped one in a bolder color to complement the color of the dress? You have a great figure and a short bolero style would still let you show it off.

ReplyDeleteNo big necklace, but how about something short but a little bold and colorful? I like the belt higher on your body and I actually like the brown one because of the higher contrast with the color of the dress.

Oh, not a wadder at all! I really like it with that last floral belt, although I also liked the brown ones. This seems to be kind of a "blank canvas" of a dress, made to show off accessories. Cute flats or kitten heels, kicky belt, chunky necklace and bracelet, and you got yourself an outfit! Don't match your shoes to the dress - match them to your accessories.
ReplyDeleteThe fit looks fantastic on you. I can agree that the color is not the best but there must be something you can do do make it work. I also think a little jacket or sweater would be great. This would definitely be a dress to make again in a fabric you love.
ReplyDeleteYou've got me stumped on this one, because I really love the classic design and the fit. You don't want to gunk it up with the wrong trim or belt. There is a designer named Milly who has a very clean, fresh line with classic clothes like this dress pattern. You might be able to steal some of her embellishment ideas for this dress: millyny.com

I'd say belt lower and dark solid. To help with the color, you could always wear a colorful scarf around your neck. Or there's always Rit dye :-)

ReplyDeleteI like the floral belt. I first thought maybe some chunky trim around the neck and sleeves about an inch away from the edge. I like the lining peeping out of the sleeves, maybe piping in the floral print around the neck and sleeves?

I'm not sure how to use absolute positioning. I just know that the examples I've looked at show it exactly like I have it. But for me, no combination of lefts and rights is making it so that one sidebar is on either side of the main text. Sorry for hijacking your comments.

ReplyDeleteI think the dress looks smart without any belt. And the fit is so good you could just make up a couple more in more flattering colours.
You could also make this dress shorter and wear it as an evening/lunch frock. So you can accessorize to your hearts content and not worry about the science lab.
Don't wad it. It needs to be shorter. Black accessories...tights, shoes, handbag.
