I've been wanting to make a purse for a while. The torquoise on the left is suede (HOW FUN IS THAT COLOR??). The fabric on the right is a quilting cotton for a lining.
I think I'll use the Gutterman upholstery thread for topstitching. I like the light tan one on the bottom.
I'm going to make this HotPatterns bag. I'm hoping I can cut it out and make it this coming Saturday. We'll see how fast I can work my way through it. I'll be using one of Paulette's machines at Seams Like Home.

I adore the colours you have chosen! What sort of needle will you be using for the Suede? I am intrigued to see the Hot pattern made up, since I find their pencil drawings for the handbags somewhat wanting!

ReplyDeleteoh. my. god. This is going to be utterly fabulous! I've made that Nairobi bag like 4 or 5 times (three for myself) and it is AWESOME. Do yourself a favour and make tons of custom pockets all through the lining. I've swiched to another handbag (a present from a friend) while I repair a broken zipper on a pocket in my beloved mustard Nairobi, and as fabulous as this RTW designer one is, it doesn't have pocets sized exactly for my stuff! How dare they not know me... ;)
ReplyDeleteoh, and I sew leather on my regular ol' machine all the time - just use a leather needle and a walking foot. If your machine can do denim, leather is a piece of piss!

ReplyDeleteI made the Nairobi back when it was a free download, and unless they changed it in the reissue, it's a ginormous bag. I scaled it down about 20% for my later versions, so you might want to take a hard look at the size before you make it, or you'll be able to stash a twin in there.
I think that would also be very cute if the quilting cotton was made into bias strips and placed along the purses' seam lines.
