Button Help

Thanks guys for all the comments on my belly. :) You guys know how to make a gal's head swell like a balloon. And I never said thank you for the advice on the embroidery machine but I do really appreciate the lengthy responses. I know it takes time to comment like that and I appreciate it.

I am currently working on BWOF 01/2009 #121. I'm not sure about buttons. They are a dark blue denim with white topstitching. I plan on adding a deep jean hem to the bottom.

These are bright aluminum buttons. I inherited a bunch of them. They are super light and shiny. It's hard to take a picture of them. So far, I think these are my favorite.

Here are the last three brass jean buttons. I'm not sure that the yellow-y brass goes with the white topstitching.

These are just plain white buttons. They are semi-opaque.

Red would be fun but then I have to sort of be careful with what I wear it with and they are a little too 4th of July. But, I still kinda like it.

These are smaller dark blue buttons. I would probably use three on the waistband and one on each pocket.

These are a smokey grey. I don't like them at all in the picture. They almost have a lavender tone to them.

Here's the inside facing. This is what makes me want to go with red buttons.

What do you guys think?

  1. I am a huge fan of contrasting buttons on clothing...so i would go with the red. When i first saw then I really liked the combo, and then I saw the facing and loved them even more.

I cant wait to see which ones you decide to use.

  2. I am for #1, #2, or #3 - I can't decide!

  3. I like #1. The red is cute, but I think I'd feel too much like a sailor. Plus, as you said, that would really limit the tops you could wear with them. But if you have enough jeans to wear with other tops and you really like the red, go for it!

I'm anxious to hear a review of the pattern. The cropped version is up next on my to-sew list. It'll be my first BWOF pants pattern.

  5. [edited, cuz I thought it was a skirt!] Nr 1 or 2 will both work very well. I think nr 1 is the best though. I don't think that the plastic buttons you show will do the denim any favors (nice topstitching BTW), as the plastic brings the look down a bit, making it look more home sewn.

  6. I like the brassy jean buttons. But, it's hard to judge because the colors don't photograph accurately. I share your concern about the brassy color with white top stitching.

  7. Without a doubt, your fave is definitely my fave.

  8. Oops! Sorry, Dawn. Your fave is not my fave LOL. The ones in the second pic are the ones I like. I thought you were referring to those but I realized you weren't.

  9. I like #2. Can't wait to see the finished pants

  10. I also like the brassy jean buttons.

  11. I like #1 because of the white topstitching. Love the lining, but no one else gets to see it, otherwise the red buttons would work.
Also, the black twill hasn't arrived yet. Do you have a tracking number or delivery verification? We should do a future button swap, I really like #1 that you have a ton of!

  12. #1 are my favorite too! I like the jeans buttons (#2) as well, but they seem a little bit small for these pants. Keep them for your next jeans project ;)

  13. I really like the bright aluminum ones best for those pants. I just love those pants. I may try them myself.

  14. My first instinct is always RED! but for the sake of multi-purposeness I would go with your first choice, the shiny silver :)

  15. I'm partial to the brass jean buttons. I do love the facing on these pants - so pretty!

  16. I vote for #1.

Here's an idea: Covered buttons out of your jeans fabric but with two lines of white topstitching down the center to play up the topstitching on the jeans. Might be too cutesy but might work.

Dawn, you are one person I'd love to see go nuts in the garment district. I'm getting kid-in-a-candy store images.

  17. My vote is for option #2. Or LindsayT's idea of topstitched fabric covered buttons.

  18. I like the first button and the red ones.

  19. My choice, for what it is worth, is the bright aluminum buttons. Nice waistband!

  20. The red buttons really give these jeans a modern twist, and it would look wonderful with all kinds of blue, red, gray, black and white tops. I actually think it would look good with most jewelcolored tops, nice and summery

  21. Dawn-great work, as always. I would vote for the brass or metallic options; I agree with Johanna Lu about the impact of plastic anything in conjunction with jeans. Your white topstitching makes it summery enough.

  22. I like the brass jeans buttons best of the ones shown. I think white buttons would look fab, but I would go for old-fashioned matte, opaque buttons (the kind with four holes and a raised rim around the edge). I think they would really "pop" and complement the topstitching!

  23. I support the red buttons - forget about 4th of July and think FASHION STATEMENT/TRENDSETTER!! You are so fashionable, you could wear anything with those pants with red buttons...although I am thinking some adorable red patent leather peep toes (bright yellow nail polish) and a flowing silk blouse with reds and yellows.
Anyway, just my 2 cents, bikini girl!

  24. I liked the red immediately, but you're probably right about limiting the wearing opportunities. Next I like the first ones, the aluminum buttons. :)

  25. Very, very nice. Love the attention to your top stitching. As for the buttons, why not try metallic, like a jean button.

  26. I'm with you...I like the aluminum ones.
