KS 3167 Undies for Me

Remember my post five days ago where I showed you the fabric? Well, here's the underwear for me. And no, dear readers, I won't be modeling these. Even I draw a line at thong underwear. This is another version of KS 3167. These underwear are super comfortable. I used stretch lace for the waistband and a microfiber for the crotch piece.

Year in Review Part 1

So, how did you guys do for 2009? I sewed 95 garments in all this year. It sounds pretty impressive but you have to remember that about 11 of those items were underwear. I'm always impressed when I do these graphs at the end of the year. It always seems like I don't sew for my kids but I really do. I'm not such a bad mother after all. Well, at least they have underwear. I'm surprised there are not more skirts on the graph. I feel like I do a ton of skirts and not many tops but that is clearly not the case.

This should come as no surprise to those of you who read my blog. I love BWOF (or whatever the hell they are calling themselves now) and Jalie patterns. The lone Burda is an envelope pattern.

How did you guys fare for the year sewing wise?

Fabric.com is having a bang up sale right now. I just ordered several (cough, cough) cotton/lycra knits for myslef. If you go to the Fabric.com Coupon Corner* they show you the current sales. I spent $58 but then got $10 taken off for the discount. I had one of those holiday $50 giftcards. I don't know about you guys but I've found that those are best to use all at once. If you use $40 of it and try to use the $10 later, they almost never work. What a great way for the credit card companies to make a killing. I left about $0.14 on my card but think of that much times the thousands of people who leave a few dollars on it.

I wear a lot of long-sleeved knit tops so I bought some cotton/lycra four-way stretch knit. I bought it in heather grey.

Burda 01-2010 #130 Boat Neck Shift Dress

Can you believe that it will be 2010??? Holy cow! I was surprised the other day when my January Burda was in the mail. They seem to be a bit early on this issue. They don't even have the preview up on the English site. They do show the full preview on the German site complete with model and technical photos.

But, any whooz-it, this simple shift dress caught my eye. It is one of the Take 1, Make 4 features. This is the unadorned version but I did leave the length at the slightly longer length. The green dress below is about two inches shorter than mine.

I made the size 34 which is my typical size for Burda.

I can also wear it over a turtleneck. This is how I would wear it to work. Although, of course, I would wear my woolen tights and my knee-high boots.

You can see I have two really large wrinkles running diagonally down the back. What are those from??!!??!? I did not do a swayback tuck (a usual alteration for me) because I figured this was too loose fitting to matter.

I really like how you attach the facings and then the sleeves keep them to the inside. I also understitched the front and back facings.

It also looks like this is a titch too narrow for my super beefy (not) shoulders. I think, instead, it's that my forward thrusting neck is pulling the front neckline down which is pulling the shoulders in a bit.

These are cap sleeves so I finished the remaining section of dress with a knit binding strip. The dress is unlined. It's a stretch polyester moleskin.

I topstitched it from the outside. With this crazy print you can't even see it.

Burda 07-2009 #140 Swim trunks and some cussing

I made the girls bathing suits so I figured I would make The Boy some swim trunks too. He'll love the sharks. Too bad I didn't drop the embroidery just a little bit further down the leg. On the next pair, I plan to make a deeper hem like what you would see on RTW shorts. I am also using a boot shoelace for the waist. I'll change that out for a regular white shoelace when I get a hold of one of them. This is a size 110 which corresponds to a size 6. My kids are tall and skinny so we will definitely be needing the tie string. They do have elastic in them too but it's probably not going to be tight enough.

Embroidery detail. This is from Emblibrary.com. My son is obsessed with all things ocean.

Son: Hey Mom, did you know that Vampyroteuthis is called the vampire squid from hell?

Me: Um, what?!??!?!?!

Son: The squid from HELL mom! What does hell mean? Hell. Hell. Hell. Hell.

Me: Where did you learn that? Hell is one of those adult words that kids shouldn't say.

Son: Oh. But what does hell mean?

Me: Well, it's a bad place. They mean a scary, dangerous squid. Where did you learn about it?

Son: On that DVD, the Blue Planet. Did you know that there is an Amazon catfish that eats only wood? WOOD, mom! Let's get one so it can eat the brush in the backyard.

Me: Hmmmm, I'll think about.

On a side note: this was a much better use of a cuss word that when he told me, "Mom, there's some fucking cheese on my tomatoes" and then said there was a "lot of fucking rain outside." I actually had to leave the room while me husband dealt with it. I was beside myself giggling uncontrollably. He's a total science nerd. I wonder where he gets that. He told his kindergarten teacher that he "loves her more than space and space goes on forever."

Burda 05-2009 #103 Knit Dress

I had a work party to attend last night. I made this saucy little dress from the May issue of BWOF. Could I go with a boring, plain, solid color? Nooooooooo, of course not.

Instead, I made a crazy-ass version of it. (I'm under this tree and a little worried that my stomping on the deck will cause the snow to fall on me.) This is a polyester/lycra ITY I bought from my local sewing boutique, Seams Like Home. It's super comfortable and I love the print. It's a little crazy but, as a friend pointed out, so am I.

The only bust alteration was to cross the "crosses" a bit more than normal. I basted it in place with the two CF together but it was a little loose with my lack of "girls". So, I just snugged it up and made the top tighter. That means I also had to make the waistband a bit smaller and the hip area too. I also made a small, 3/8"?, swayback adjustment. I think it would have looked even better with a solid black waistband. I wore it last night with these boots.

As Emeril would say, "BAM!" Hello, booty! There was no way to match stripes, blocks, and squiggles so I didn't even try.

It was a fun party with lots of dancing. If there is one thing I can do, it's dance.
