Another Houston Trip

This is my husband's last trip to Houston for a really long time. But, I did score in the fabric department.

Green polyester crepe? He got it in the remnant bin so he's not sure of the fiber content. It's really pretty and drapey. The right is a microsuede. It's kind of like a moleskin but so much soft.

The left is black Sofia knit. The right is a beautiful shirting material. He wants me to make him a dressshirt once I master the David Coffin book.

Left is a 4-way stretch knit. The right is wool challis? I've never heard of challis. Can I wash it? It's beautiful and drapey. I love it. It is so much more beautiful than what the picture shows.

Two duppionis. The left one is a dark burgundy and the right is a checkered one. Very cool.

The left fabric is amazing. It's superfine wool jersey. It's amazing! It's sooooo soft. I make have to jump onboard the Pattern Review Cardi Sew Along. It would make the most amazing wrap. The fabric on the right is wool, silk, mohair , and linen. Does my husband know quality or what? It just looks blue in the photo but it's got texture like you can't believe. I'll have to be doing a lot of thinking before I do anything to that one.

He bought me two boucles because I specifically requested them. They are perfect. He so knows me. He totally gets me. I'm so lucky.

Love the fabrics! Didn't know what challis was either, so I turned to my new favorite book, CS's fabric sewing guide. Here's a short abstract: Wool challis: soft but firm, plan-weave. \lightweight, drapes and gathers well. Easy to sew, but can fray badly. Puckered seams and skipped stitches are sometimes a problem. Easily damaged by too large needles and by ripping. Easy to shape with heat and moisture, but also easily damaged by irons that are to hot. small stichlength. freq. used for blouses and dresses. well-suited for gathers, unpressed pleats, cowl necklines and draped or soft folds. Pre-shrink, but for most dry-cleaning rather than washing. hope this helps.

Gorgeous fabrics, every one of them!
I cannot imagine what my husband would bring back from a fabric shopping expedition.
I'm pretty sure every piece would be a licensed NFL, NCAA, MLB print of some sort. Probably all fleece.

You are a lucky gal!

Lucky girl, beautiful score. When I worked years ago in an office, I had skirts and dresses from challis, but in rayon. I remember it being dry clean only. Check Fabric Mart's site for some listings of it, they usually carry challis. You can check the care on those items.

You are lucky! Can I hire him to shop for me? Haha :) Congrats on your marathon time too.

I sewed w/ challis in the 70's - since yours is wool, when wet -if over handled- it can shrink, felt and even twist a bit, so if handwashing treat it like you would a nice wool sweater (long cool soak and swish) test a swatch first with vinegar first for colour fastness first and let it drip dry (you can always dry clean if you pre-fer). Challis is delicate and has low thread count and you may consider an interlining for stability - depending on the garment design.

Liberty of London used to make lots of wool challis back in the 70's and 80's. It did not come cheap! It's a fabulous fabric to sew and wear, especially in cooler climates like yours. Hey, the best I can get out of my husband is a ride to a fabric store. When I visited San Francisco a while back with my dad and husband they hit a local bar while I perused the 4 or so floors of Britex. So I guess that's not too bad.

We've been married longer than I care to admit, but my dh wouldn't know where to begin to look for fabric for me. Heck, he's never even been IN a fabric store. Ooops take that back, he's been in JoAnns to buy me gift cards. I shudder to think what he would buy in the way of fabric though.
That challis sounds yummy.
