I haven't made a Burda item for a loooong time. I liked these shorts though and I needed some running shorts. I used a blue Supplex fabric from my local fabric boutique. The trim fabric is a stretch poplin fabric. I made this shirt out of it and have some left over. It makes fun bias tape.
I didn't realize until this was mostly done but the drawstrings are sewn into the front sides and do NOT go all the way around the waist.
I don't know what is with my pictures. Not one of them included my whole head. I think it may be that I'm using a camera and taping it to the tripod. Ghetto, I know. But, it mostly works and I don't know where the little piece is that screws on to the camera bottom. These babies are short.* This is a Jalie top. See more about it here.
Hmmmm, other details . . . The pattern calls for 1.5" elastic. I bought .75" elastic in bulk last year so I just used the zigzag stitch and linked them together. I used my industrial snap press to put in the grommets. I love that thing.
I'm planning on making that knit June Burda with the bust gathers next. I really liked that top.
*Yes, I realize there are the haters out there that will say something like, "You are too old to be wearing those!" or "Wow, there she goes again! Too short and there she is parading around like that!" Really? You need to rain hate down on other people? I guess if it makes you feel better about yourself, then have at it. :)

No hate here, the shorts look amazing on you. I've got to get one of those snap pressers, but I don't think it'll make my legs short appropriate.
Do people actually post comments like that? Telling you what you can wear (or not wear)? Lamesauce. I'm not much of a commenter, and I cannot for the life of me remember how I found your blog, but the thought of that inspired me to stop being a weird lurker for a minute so I could tell you I think they look nice and very comfortable for running.
I like the bias trim--it looks very fun and kicky! Great job and I say you look great in the shorts, so wear them to your heart's content.

Dawn, no haters here either. These are running shorts and if my legs looked that good I'd be wearing a pair just like yours. Nice job!
I want to say how much I enjoy reading your blog. It always brings a smile to my face and I really appreciate the effort you go to photograph the clothes on youself. I know how time consuming this can be. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to blog. You willingness to share has helped me on many occasions with my own sewing.
I love your bias tape, your snap press, and the length of your shorts. Toooo cute!
The only hate sent your way is called jealousy!! You look fabulous and should wear stuff like that every chance you get!! Hot mama!!
Just glad you don't share photos of your tongs ;)
If you have legs like that, show them off!
Personally all I have is admiration for you, standing outside in shorty shorts in what must be a balmy 50 degrees. It's enough to make me go put on a fleece pullover!
Sister. If I had legs like that I'd live in shorts and minis. Whatev. Can you describe that fabric a bit more? I like these shorts but was thinking kind of a terry cloth? I'm not terribly creative with athletic gear.
If I looked like that I would be wearing those shorts too...you go girl!!! Good job!!
Hate, smate. If I had legs as fit as yours, I'd wear these all year long. Good to have you sewing and blogging again. Your blog is one I look for often. Enjoy the running weather and your great style.
I was thinking"...great legs...perhaps if I ran, mine would look a little bit like hers...". Wasn't going to comment cos shorts are shorts, but after the last para decided to tell you most of us think kind thoughts and you DO have great legs :)
I think that your shorts look great and believe me - they aren't that short! I live in the land of Daisy Duke shorts on a plus size woman. Lord shield my eyes from that sight.
Yours are practically clam-diggers in comparison. ;)
If I had legs like that, I would wear short shorts too. They're very cute - I love the bias trim.
You did a great job! Could you share where you bought your snap press, please? I am making baby clothes, and I am terrified of messing up my project right at the end by putting in snaps with just a hammer, like it is suggested on the snaps' packaging. Thanks a lot in advance! (And, yes, it's great to see you blogging again! I enjoy reading about your projects.)
Great shorts, great legs!!! What's not to like. If I had legs like you I'd be showing them girlfriend. And age - well there's lots of young folk that shouldn't be wearing short skirts or shorts but they still do !!! Love your blog.Kathy
you're in awesome shape, wear shorts as short as you want! you totally deserve to.
There must be something wrong with me, but when you said they were really short and I looked at the photo - I thought, no, not that short. I wear shorts as short as this to gym (I do gym, I don't run) and I am heaps older than you! Don't stress, they look great and for those that don't think so, they should go and do something that will build up a sweat and see if they want to wear long pants!
Re. the haters: You're one of the few persons with a body to wear anything (and if you weren't but liked it, more power to you). And I LOVE that you're a fearless blogger, showing us whatever you please. Your blog, your choice!
Come on, you look great ! Keep on using anything you want, because you can ! Greetings from Brazil.
Girl, if I had your legs I would be rocking those short shorts!
They look fabulous.
Internet haters suck! Those shorts are super cute (who knew running shorts could be cute?) and you look great in them. Flaunt it!
Too old? Hell to the no! You look fantastic (always have), and those shorts looks perfect for running. I should make myself some, so thanks for your post with pictures, it really, really helps those of us that were on the fence. Nasty internet commenters need to find a new hobby.
Whilst they are indeed short, that seems appropriate for running. I guess its practical as they won't catch on the thigh with each stride. Might not be quite so appropriate for other occasions where something a bit longer might be more suitable. As the others have said you have really nice legs and can carry the shorty shorts off with aplomb.
If I looked as good as you do, I'd run naked. And if the haters could catch me, they could kiss my arse.
Have to agree that the "haters" are jealous.
Love your shorts. They look great on you.
Mermie
These aren't even what I would call short shorts. They're just running shorts. And, to echo what others have said: perhaps I should run so my legs would resemble yours. Perhaps I should walk first :-)
I'm sorry there are unpleasant people out there. The internet is just like life, only anonymous. :-(
You have touched upon a little pet peeve of mine...the concept that a woman becomes "too old" for certain types of clothing. Says who?!
Wear what you enjoy, what makes you feel good and in this case what works. Running shorts are best when they are short.
Great job on the shorts! Happy running!
It's funny, when I looked at the pictures of them on you my first thought was "Damn! If my legs looked like that I'd be in short shorts all. the. time!" Then I read your last comment and really, the haters are gonna hate. You look great in those shorts and should be proud of yourself for having such a strong, fit body.
Those are perfect for running :) you want as little fabric as possible to keep cool...and in the summer I have to wear sleeveless tops when running, it's just so much better. They look great on you!
Lemme see ... short shorts are easier to run in, you look good in them, and who gives a flip about what other people think!? I wear short shorts when running errands, even though I only made them for kayaking, my legs don't look half as good as yours, and I don't care what "they" say!
No hate here! You look GREAT in those shorts, and I LOVE the trim you made with the poplin - so cute! Have fun running!
Earlier today I was just thinking about making a pair of these for swim shorts....now I am definitely going to make a pair - LOVE THEM!
(of course, they unfortunately won't make my legs look as good as yours, but that's life :-)
Another admirer here, these shorts are great and yes, with legs like yours you can wear anything you want. Thanks for the close up pics, they are super helpful to beginner like myself!
If anyone comments that your shorts are too short, explain to them that you are an athlete and that athletes tend to wear sport specific clothing for training and competition. This isn't an entirely new concept. Do they watch the Olympic track and field coverage at all? Your shorts are modest compared to what the elite runners wear (and there is nothing wrong with how they dress, either). I was at a running race last year and it was summer, rather warm, and I raced in shorts not unlike yours and a sports bra. A woman spectating commenting to some people on my team that I was dressed inappropriately and should put a shirt on. Whatever.
I have to say that being relatively new to sewing and the sewing blogosphere, I can say that the catty remarks are much more prevalent here than in other circles. I've been an athlete for nearly two decades and a blogging athlete for 6 years and no one ever makes comments like that on our blogs. It is a strange phenomenon unique to the sewing community, it seams. I have never seen my cycling and running friends tell people to calm down and lay off the negative comments, but it seems to be a regular occurrence on many of the sewing blogs I read. Strange...
I'm older than you and I've made and I wear those shorts. So to heck with the haters. You look great and did a good job!
You are the most awesome seamstress! I so enjoy watching the works in progress, after production, and with you wearing them.
Please keep up the blogging of all the details. Beautiful work!
And ignore/delete the weirdo nasties. Unfortunately the world has many of them.
I think the shorts are not too short on you. You look very cute in them and you definintely have the great legs and buns to pull them off. I like them. A lot.
Too short? Hah! Jeez, when I was in high school forty million years ago, I wore shorts like that all the time. I am just jealous as hell that you can be over the age of 18, wear those shorts and look that good. Sigh....
Dude, they're RUNNING shorts! They're meant to be SHORT.
I'm also chiming in to say how much I love your blog. The sewing is always inspiring, your legs are gorgeous and my DH and I are still talking about the moose!
Kelley
Very cute, and not too short. :) Especially not too short for athletic wear - they kinda have to be short if you are a serious runner, right? I know if I ever get past silly little mini "sprints" on the treadmill, I'm going to have to wear something shorter that won't bother the fronts of my legs with irritating hems...
WTG!! Those shorts will be perfect for running. I agree, ignore the haters, they're not worth your time and energy to waste any thought on. And girl, you have incredible legs!!! If I had legs like that I'd be wearing short shorts all the time. LOL Wear and run proudly in your new attire.
The shorts look great. I wear shorts very similar for running and I am older than you! Now, I'm challenged to make a pair!!
Cute shorts!:)
I'm repeating here...If I had your legs I wear those very cute shorts!
The shorts look great and bias trim is a fun treatment. I wish I had your discipline to stay so fit.
The shorts are awesome, and everyone (and I do mean everyone, all bodies) are wearing running shorts this summer. Which is a huge relief because it's super hot here and it's so much nicer to be outside in cool zippy running shorts than anything else.
I'll have to check out the Burda June pattern you're talking about, I need more knit tops.
You're what, under 35? And in good physical condition, could live closer to 100 than any other generational group. You are still a baby, dear. Those shorts are fine. You are fine. Ask your husband, he will say they are cute, you are cute. It's a shame there are people out there that that want to control your individuality. I was looking at those very shorts this morning. Thank you for the review.
Dawn,
Awesome shorts; I'm going to Seattle at the end of the month. I am going by Seattle Fabrics and hopefully can get some of the fabric of the type you used. I love them on you - I'm a runner/worker outer:) and I work out or run in long shorts. Great job (might I add, as usual!). . . I am in week four of P90x.
These shorts are great and you look great in them! You need to make dozens more:)
Cute running shorts. How strange that people would comment adversely about any of your sewing. Nasty!
Awesome shorts, and at least you're hot in them! I posted a pic of my swimsuit muslin, and I'm in no way near the shape you're in. My philosophy is it's my blog and I gave you fair warning.
They look great! How is supplex to sew with? I hear it can be irritating on the skin. Is that true? I'm also try find a place that sells it or other activewear fabric. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!
Super cute running shorts! You make me want to start running so I can wear them. :)
Wonderful shorts and you look fabulous! love your blog & sewing details.
I'm just laughing about the ghetto camera set-up. You need to enlist your dh for the photo shoots!
I wish I looked that fabulous in shorts! Nice work, and thank you for sharing the details - it's always helpful for those of us who are just starting out with sewing.
The only problem with shorts in Alaska are the mosquitoes.
"Haters." I hate that term. It reminds me of that hater Sarah Palin.
Another who would wear shorts like that if I my legs looked like that!
I love your shorts!! I can't believe anyone would say anything negative about them...they must be jealous is all I can say. Those are very cute and look terrific on you with your great athletic figure. You should wear them with pride. Any haters out there need to go for a long run, build up some endorphins and lose their negativity...that's all I can say!!
