Kid Sewing

This is size 6 of the That*Darn*Kat underwear pattern I used before. This, obviously, is the boy version. They have a functional two-layer fly and everything. I finished them last night and put them in my son's dresser. This morning I asked my son if he saw the new underwear and the conversation went something like this:

Me: Did you see the new underwear I made for you yesterday. I put them in your dresser.
Boy: I have to be cautious when they have no number.
Me: **blink, blink**
Boy: They were missing my number.
Me: What the heck are you talking about?
Boy: The butt number!!!!!
Me: What number? There's a number on your butt??!!? We should get that checked by the doctor.
Boy: **big sigh** Mom, there's no size label so I don't know if they are mine or The Sisters'. I don't want to get The Lines* you know.
Me: Righty-o. Well, they are yours and I don't have the equipment to put the butt number on.

I love this pattern because they are totally functional and they use up teeny, tiny pieces of scrap knit. I used material from this dress, this shirt, this dress, and this top.

*He gets lines on his hips when he wears The Sisters' underwear. He doesn't like The Lines so he checks all of his underwear for size labels. He's sort of a crazy-ass type-A person already and he's only five.

Hehehe - my daughter was like that - I once bought her a lovely new dress, and she was most upset that she couldn't wear it right away because it said it was size five, and she was only four.

He's pretty darn smart, but he hasn't figured out that The Sisters' undies don't have that "equipment gate" in the front? Too cute!!

So maybe buy a pack of white (or another color, whatev) singlefold bias tape, sew it in the back of his briefs and write a number or his initials on it. Think that would work!?! ;)

Too funny!
So I'm assuming the lines are cause by the seams typically on the sides of GIRL underwear?
You did a great job

LOL When he said the Lines, I immediately thought VPL? Visible Panty Line? How great that a guy is concerned about his appearance from the back! I'm thinking that this is is first pair with a functional fly, so that difference would not be immediately apparent.

Just went and bought this pattern- yours came out so cute and I have that same bug fabric! My 2 yr old is just starting to potty train and I can't wait to make him some undies. I told thatdarncat the reference came from you!

PS: for labels, I use printable iron on paper (the kind for dark fabrics). I made cute labels that say "Made with Love by Mom" and then use a sharpie to write the pattern # and size. Helps me remember front and back on t- shirts and shorts.
