Fuck!!! Why do I always do this with sheath dresses? EVERY time I make one I do it wrong and end up ripping out the zipper. I can sew almost everything else without a sew ripper handy. Why does the sheath dress get me??? And what makes me even more mad is that I even thought about the steps today knowing that sheath dresses trip me up. I declined to look at Marji's tutorial because I already knew how to do it. Uck! Nothing pisses me off more than being stupid. I vow from now on the actually read that tutorial from beginning to end before I start the damn dress. Dammit!

So what did I do? It's the same damn thing I do every damn time I make a sheath dress. Marji wrote a fantastic tutorial on attaching the lining and zipper to a sheath dress that makes it very RTW. In order for you to turn the dress right side out, you must leave the CB seam and side seams open. Well, what did I do? I put in my invisible zipper (perfectly, I might add), attached the lining, and sewed up the CB seam! Arrrggggggg. I had to rip it all out and now I'll have to put in the zipper again and make sure all the black lines match up again.

I will start reading directions. I will start reading directions. I will start reading directions.

Love the warnings at the begin of various posts.

You can do it!! Cursing is good for the soul ;)

Keep it together, chica! We all do it at some time, and we all know better! It will still be an amazing dress, so go easy on yourself! And swear away! I sound like a cartoon character when I screw up and my kids are around, "Fricknfracknlackn..."

So, I'm not the only one who learns her lessons the hard way, a time or two (or three) ... Breathe In, Breathe Out ...

I use a different method for sheaths. I sew the zip in, finish the CB seam and do the same for the lining. I attach at the neck and leave the side seams undone for lining and fashion fabric. You can then roll the lining up and fold the fashion fabric over to sew the armholes. When you've completed both sides you can sew the side seams of the dress and the lining all in one. This is a bad description so I'll see if I can find an online tutorial. It's easier than it sounds. Curse away, it's good to clear your head. The dress is still going to be lovely.

You are not alone. If my sewing room walls could talk, oh the things they might repeat!

Why don't you get yourself the Go Little Black Dress pattern; yes you'll still have to read the instructions, but they're really excellent, and once followed, not so easily forgotten. I'm making a lined top based on it right now - hey, a top with a CB zip is just a ultra micro mini sheath dress. Yeah, the zipper goes in last.

Is it wrong that I love cussing? I never do it around my kids, though, just to be clear :)

I know exactly what you mean! I ripped out the zipper (because the sheath was twisted) three TIMES! I know!
And I read the ****! directions!

I do it *every* single time. And you're right. Marji does have the best directions.

Ahhhww---I understand your frustration. It sucks when this happens. Don't be too hard on yourself. It happens to everyone sometime--even the best seamstresses.

BTW--thanks for visiting my blog and the compliment on my pants!!!!

I had to use the seam ripper today on the easiest job imagineable...argh. Sorry, you had to use yours, too!

Sheath dresses, in particular attaching the lining, gets me all the time. Do you, by any chance, have a tutorial that explains how to machine-attach the lining to a back slit in a sheath dress/skirt? You are so good at finding these tutorials, I thought I ask.

To a happier sewing day tomorrow!

Ad our local Canadian friends say, "sucks to be you, ey?"

You will get this figured out and the cursing doesn't bother me.

Oh, Dawn. The cussing that goes on in my sewing room. But I am trying to be more careful because my little granddaughters tend to hang around there. I would never want them to talk to another living soul the way I talk to myself! You'll get it right -- as you always do. Just nice to know that I'm not the only one using the seam ripper!

Frustrating for you, but you've made the post so damn entertaining how am I supposed to wish you a speedy resolution?!

[wishing it anyway]

So funny! I went through something similar with my Mardi Gras dress and an invisible zipper plus lining - can't wait to see it on you though!

so glad I just read this post. I spend an hour last night re-pinning and adjusting the back of my first sheath dress. Ripped out zipper and center back seam. Don't know if I have lost my ability to read numbers on a tape measure or the pattern, but it is one big mess of bunching. I had to fold it up and set it aside to let the rage subside.
