Kauai is covered in chickens. They are wild there. I never could get a straight answer from anyone about whether you could kill and eat the chickens. Not that I was going to kill and eat one but coming from a family of hunters, one is curious about this sort of thing.
We did several fun hikes. This one was about 5 miles round trip.
I couldn't resist going to a fabric store. It was mostly quilting cotton and all of it was Hawai'i inspired. I came out empty handed. The fabrics were beautiful but not my cup of tea.
This was a leafy corridor on our 5 mile hike. The trees seemed to be closing in around you.

WOW....beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing them :)
Not even "one" little piece of fabric ??? :0
Hi Dawn,
The story I heard was that the chickens were brought in for cock fights, but are now protected. My mother said they used to be only in the national parks but now have overrun the island.
I really enjoy your blog.
Thanks for sharing your vacation--looks like you had a nice relaxing time in the warm zone!
I love the top you made for your DD too. You will love an embroidery machine. I have had several since DGD #1 was born in 1996! They are great for baby gifts, kids' clothes, monograms, etc. Your projects are awesome!

Such a beautiful landscape, you're so lucky! Maybe in another life... like retirement!
Beautiful picture! Wow. I remember being told something about the chickens...but I've forgotten it. :D Cutie husband pic too!
Gorgeous pictures.
I went to Kauai, and the chickens were the funniest thing to me! I had a blog post about them, too: http://roadyjane.blogspot.com/2007/05/hawaii-day-1.html
I also visited Hawaii...on Google Earth last night ;) . Didn't look quite as beautiful as your pics though. Coming from a hunting paradise, it is funny how people look at you when asking them if you can hunt/eat a particular animal. Although I will NOT eat squirrel or rabbit no matter how many times someone tells me their Grandmother's Squirrel Pie is delicious.
I hope to go one year. I love hearing you talk about your vacation and I love seeing the pictures. May I ask, what kind of camera you are using. Our only digital acts up a bit, and we are casually looking.
So beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I have Hawai'i envy now. I haven't been there in 16 years, and I never made it to Kauai. Sigh...
We were to Ohau last month and the same thing with the chickens there. They seem to be doing ok fending for themselves. I too found a fabric store in Wakikki (Fabric Mart). A lot of the fabrics were of Hawaiian theme but some weren't. Could have bought a lot but fabric is heavy and with the weight allowance for luggage I only bought a few pieces.
Wonderful pictures, Dawn - it looks like you had a great trip.
There's an award for you on my blog.
