Velvet Top - Kwik Sew 4134

I picked up a fun piece of knit crushed velvet when I was at the National City Swap Meet. I wanted it to be something fun. I finally decided the other night to make this out of it. I've used this pattern before here. I like the top and wear it often in the winter.

I only modified the length of the sleeves. I left everything else as is. What do you think? It's definitely a lot of this pink color which is not a normal color for me. I do love the back ruffles.

I think I like it??

Yea, I do like it. I'm not sure it's love but I think it's growing on me. What do you guys think?

KwikSew 3854 and Jalie 2805 for the WIN!

Isn't the sailor short cute? I've never sewn anything with this sort of button closure on it. This is one of the patterns I bought for $0.10 at my local fabric store. I made the medium but I could have probably made the small. My hip measurements are right between the two sizes, but since KwikSew tends to be larger on me, I should go with the smaller size.

Here it is in a dark denim. This is a remnant from a pair of Eleonore jeans I made. I really like how it fits. The legs are so wide, it looks more like a skirt than a pair of shorts. The top is Jalie 2805 also made out of remnants. This is one of my favorite Jalie patterns EVER. So many options.

This is the second Jalie top I made for these shorts. This is also out of remnants. I always feel good when I can use things up. This is a Girl Charlee knit. Since it was a remnant, I didn't have enough for the sleeves or the back. So I had to get creative.

I put the back on the cross grain but it works with this fabric because it is pretty stretchy both ways.

The back of the shorts has two shaping darts and a wide waistband.

First, I put on the cutest red, white, and blue buttons. But, because they are probably 20 years old and plastic, two of them broke after I put them on. Dammit. So then I went with the pink buttons.

I didn't have enough fabric for the entire pocket so I just made a lining piece and added a small piece of the denim to the top. The construction of these shorts is pretty cool I think.

This whole bib-flap-thing folds down which kind of makes for unusable pockets. But the pockets are a cute addition, right?

Have I told you how much I love my new sewing machine with the perfect buttonholes??

I made a pretty large swayback adjustment on these. I think the total was one inch over three different places. But this waistband was on the fold so it would be two inches total.

Over all, it's a win! I've been vacation sewing the past few days because we head to San Diego again in a few weeks. I have another thing to show you too.

KwikSew 3770 - Leggings

Remember when I made these before? I previously made the ankle scrunchy version. I always wanted to make the tuxedo stripe version and I finally had some time this weekend. I used a wicking 4-way polyester stretch as the main fabric and a stretch vinyl for the stripe. I knew thay would fit well because the other pair fit well.
ks_3760_5ks_3770_1

The only change I made was to narrow the stripe by about 3/4”. I knew these would be too wide for me as is and this is a normal KS alteration for me. Their patterns always seem to run wide on my body. Anyway, I love the fit and the fun stripe down the leg.
ks_3770_2

There is a tiny bit of extra fabric under the butt but I think it’s fine.

And to make up for being a dreary Monday, guess what came in the mail?!?!?! YYYAAASSSSSSS! Who wants to do a Sew Along? I was thinking maybe the Charlie bomber jacket?? Anybody interested??? I want to make one in a bright, bold floral and one in a fancy fabric. I’m not sure what I have in my mind’s eye yet, maybe a quilted wool? A boucle? A sequined fabric? FUR??
ks_3770_5

I’m sure I’ll be sewing up a strom the next week or two. When new Jalie’s come out, I get motivated!! And do let me know if you are interested in some sort of Sew Along!!

Kwik Sew 4134 - Founcy Knit Top

I’m working my way through my $0.10 patterns. There are some that I rather love, like this flouncy knit top. The front is kind of boring, but I love the back. I also think next time I will add a neck cowl neck to it. Doesn’t it just need one?
ks_4134_6ks_4134_5

The fabric is from the National City Swap Meet, shockingly. It’s a thin, ribbed sweater knit. I love the heathered coloring and it’s nice and cozy on. (The scarf is just a $4.00 scarf from Target!)
ks_4134_2

I used Version A for the front and Version B for the back. I wanted the longer length in the back. You can see from the side view that the change in angle from front to back is pretty steep. I should have made it a little less steep. I do love the but coverage though. The sleeves are kind of a weird length. Originally, they were the full length, but I didn’t love the entire-torso-in-teal so I cut them off a bit. I think right above the elbow would have been better.

ks_4134_4

Isn’t the back fun? With gathering AND a ruffle? How can it get more fun than that? Well, it would be more fun if it wasn’t sticking to my Jalie Eleonore jeans, but they are still pretty fun, I say!

I’ll make another of these, but with a large cowl this time. And maybe lace on the bottom. Next up, outfit for Daughter #2.

KwikSew 3561–Simple Knit Dress

This is one of the patterns I bought for $0.10. I didn’t really need it, because I can use my Jalie t-shirt, but it’s fun to see how things compare. This is a “Kwik and Easy” pattern so it’s really easy. This version is the long-sleeved, boatneck, long dress. I have also made the shorter version and wooo-weeeee is it short. I’ll take pictures of that one too.
ks_3561_4

It fits well, but it certainly has more ease than my Jalie pattern. I’m not surprised by that at all. I often pinch out a half inch or so in the CF and CB of a Kwik Sew pattern. Their smallest size is an XS and I make a S. If I make the XS, the other measurements seem to be out of whack, like the vertical distance between bust, waist, and hips. Overall, I like it. It’s a cute and (very!!) easy pattern. But, you can also just make one of these out of your favorite t-shirt pattern.
ks_3561_1

You can see this is a bit sloppy in the back. The belt helps hold it in. The fabric is a rayon blend and it’s so comfortable (bought at National City Swap Meet). It’s kind of like wearing secret pajamas.
ks_3561_2

I probable could have made the neckline binding just a bit more snug.
ks_3561_3

Overall, it’s a win, but I like my Jalie t-shirt dresses more . . . maybe? (Jalie dress number 1, and number 2). This would be better with a bit pinched out of the CF and CB.

KwikSew 3770–Leggings

I bought this pattern for $0.10. Yes, you read that correctly. In September, I came across a great deal on Kwik Sew patterns. So far, I’ve only been able to have a little sewing time since then. We moved in November and sold our house. I can’t believe how much stuff we have. I STILL have boxes that need to be unpacked. I did a ton of purging too. But with six people and a dog, well, there is still a ton of stuff. Anyway, I was finally able to make this pattern and I love it. I made the ruched tights on the right. I find that KwikSew patterns are a little big for me. I started with the size Small. Then, I folded out a 1/2” (this is a one-piece legging) from the waist to the ankle to decrease the width. They fit nicely.
ks3770

You can see they are rather high up on my waist but I like that in a pair of leggings. I would always wear these with a tunic or dress. The fabric is this amazing, buttery, soft, four-way stretch material. It feels like a cotton blend, but I’m pretty sure it’s a poly with Lycra. They are soooooo cozy.
FullSizeRender (52)FullSizeRender (53)

To get the ruched leg, you take a piece of very stretched elastic and sew it to the fabric. On the inner leg, there is a seam. On the outer leg, you just mark the top and bottom of the placement for the elastic. I like the ruching at the bottom, it gives it a little bit more if I’m just running around in my sneakers, but it is also invisible if I wear knee high boots.

I have another Ottobre to show you and another KwikSew pattern. I really need to find my “photo spot” in my new house. I want to find a place that gets lots of natural light, does not have tons of clutter, and has space in front of it for a tripod. Ideally, it wouldn’t have a stupid outlet in the frame either, but I’m not sure how picky I can get. This house is big, but has a TON of windows. Taking a picture in front of a window wouldn’t work either.

You would have done it too . . .

I recently went to my local fabric boutique for the Pattern Review bias dress challenge (I MADE IT TO ROUND 3, by the way!!!!!!!!!!!!) and saw all these beauties. I bought them. You would have too. They were $0.10. Let that marinate for a moment. TEN CENTS per pattern. I couldn’t resist. You totally would have done it too. I would not have paid full price for most of these, but some of these are gems. These are the good ol’ Kwik Sew patterns of old. Most of these are printed on the thick, white paper. Kwik Sew is always good at the basics, knit tops, active wear, and directions. I was especially thinking of my kids here. I was thinking what great patterns for them to learn to sew.

These are all “new” Kwik Sews. These are ones made by McCalls and they have white paper, but it is thin. I have never made these before and some are not my style. But, ten cents? Come on . . . There are also some really cute patterns in here too. I really, really like the loose white and black knit tops with the ruffle edges. I, of course, love the active wear in the top row too.
ks3ks14ks1

These are the older Kwik Sews with the thick, white paper. I love all the kid swimsuits. And I’ve thought many times about purchasing the adult swimsuit with the side cut-outs. I love these knit tops and the kid sleeper pajamas. The shorts with the six buttons are really cute and I love the moto jacket. There are also a bunch of great basics in here: t-shirt dress, leggings, straight skirt, circle skirt, and loads of knitwear which is my bread and butter!

ks7ks8ks9ks10ks11

There were also some interesting blends of old and new. These patterns must have been produced in the “transition” year/s of Kwik Sew to McCalls. The drawings and packaging are old but the paper is the new style and they say McCalls on the back.
ks4ks5

So, I bought 29 Kwik Sew patterns for $2.90. You would have too, wouldn’t you????

We find out the third challenge tomorrow morning and I’m just dying to know what it is. The first two challenges haven’t been exactly easy so I’m a little nervous about what this one will be. Jumpsuit? Activewear? Bomber jacket? Cocktail dress? Wish me luck!

KwikSew 3672 - Simple Knit Skirt

I will be making more of these skirts. I will also make this top. With modifications. I read several reviews of the top and how the finishing is, well, lacking. But, this time, I made the simple flared skirt.
ks_3672_1

This is made from another piece of Spandex House fabric. I can’t find it on their site, but it’s galaxies. It’s pretty cool fabric if you ask me.

Yes, my children took these pictures and “helped” me pose.

This is a great, simple, comfortable, knit skirt. It is a bit on the short side, however. I may add an inch or two the next time I make it.

The waistband is a simple yoga-type band.

One of my twins said this looks like a bat and now that is all I can see.

Before cutting into my fun Spandex House fabric, I tried it with a cheap JoAnn’s denim-look knit.
FullSizeRender (41)

I did a gold color for the hem to mimic the colors of denim jeans.
FullSizeRender (42)

I’m glad the fabric wasn’t expensive beacuse it already has two runs in the knit after one wearing.

Next up? I have another Jalie 3024 that I bet you’ll like!
