Okay, what about this?

Thank you guys for the comments. I realize that most people just click away when they see something with which they don't agree. I do the same thing sometimes because I don't want to offend or make someone feel bad. I really appreciate the feedback and I'm not offended at all. I have a thick skin and I've never worn cropped pants before. Okay, taking your comments into consideration, I made two shorter mock-ups. If you consider the first pictures "long" then this would be the medium length. I do think it looks better. I didn't want to go short-short with the cropped pants because they are supposed to be 7/8 length pants. That's what Burda says anyway.

This would be the shorter length.

Here's a composite of the three lengths so you can compare (you'll have to click to see the whole thing). Do you think I need to go even shorter?!?

Thanks for the advice!
ETA: So I just did a search on cropped pants and came up with this article at www.youlookfab.com. The top three cropped pants are "safer" than the bottom three choices. It looks like I'm trying to attempt one of the "riskier" lengths. Maybe I'll try a much shorten version and see what you think.

I like the third picture the best, the one that shows the most leg (in the best way possible). The other two give weird proportions.

I like the top photo- the "middle length" - even the leg on the right that's a little longer. IMO, cropped pants are kind of out of style, but you can still get away with an intentional 7/8 pant.

I like the third one best too! I would not suggest going any shorter, however.

I also like the third one best.

I like the right leg of the first photo. It looks intentionally shorter, but not too short. My husband's aunt is rather short (5'2"ish) and but petite capris and wears them as regualar length pants:)! I told her I would hem regular ones for her (and have done a few) but she doesn't want to trouble me too much...LOL

I like the shorter length on you. The longer 7/8 length looks like long pants that's too short... hi-waters, as we call it.

Difficult decision....
The second one (medium high) has the potential of being fashion-forward in a good way, but imo would require some careful thought about footware and tops. Shortest are the easiest to pull off, but then you'd lose the whole 7/8th look. mmmm. Sorry, no good advice on this from me..

Love the shortest version!

i like the medium length. i think the shortest version looks like a little too short. i dont know how you are going to decide!!!!

I like them anywhere between your right leg in the medium photo and the shortest photo. Helpful, I know.

I also like the right leg in the middle photo, and I think you could even go a tiny bit shorter too.

A slightly different perspective, I don't think this is only a short/tall issue, it's also a long waisted/vs. long legged issue. You've said before you are long waisted (which I am too), which usually has the irritating corresponding short legs (proportionally, you know -- at least it does for me). So you might try playing with your top lengths as well to see if a shorter shirt, or no layers makes a difference to which leg length looks best. just my two cents. You always look well turned out, so I'd take your judgement over mine any day.

You could always go literal and measure the 7/8 and see which one of the three is closest to that ratio and then what it looks like on you. I personally think 7/8 will look great once the cuffs are finished and neat. Along as the pant is sleek and finished, 7/8 looks on-purpose and not like a pair of shrunken pants.

With what I said above, I like the middle length photo. It looks just about right.

I'm the same height (5'5"). Cropped is tricky, the middle length, maybe a smidgen higher is best. But consider losing the cuffs...

I vote for the shortest length. I like that. I agree with Kitten that I wouldn't go shorter with this particular pair of pants (pant leg width and all) but the shortest ones really do look nice on you.

I vote for the middle one too. The proportions seem right. I would wear a low vamp heel with them.

Be prepared for lots of negative feedback. I have one pair of pants that length, and they are not widely accepted in my small town which is near a large city, but is in a fashion rut.

Hey, now you're cooking! I like the shortest one. However, you will always have to wear those shoes. IMO, of course. Happy Sewing!

I like the middle photo

I like the third length (shortest, so far) the best. The first two remind me of high-water pants.

I like the shortest ones. They show off your lower leg better, which is great, by the way.

I'm with the ones who like the shorter version. It looks very nice this way :)

gwensews said...

I think the shorter pants are the most flattering.

Vicki said...

I like the middle one. It shows your slim ankles off nicely. On you it looks just right.

I like the medium length - short enough to look "cropped" (not just too short), but long enough for a nice proportion. The shorter length would be fine if the pants were more fitted; IMO in the looser fit, the look is boxy.

The middle picture. I think being thin, having nice slim ankles and a good figure like you do is key. You don't need to be 5'10" to pull off croped pants. By the way, you look good in everything!

Middle one...no cuffs.

I like the shortest one the best if you are going with a casual sandal like the one you are wearing. I think part of the problem is that the fabric is just a little to stiff. If the pants were made of a softer fabric, and you were wearing dressy sandals, I would go with the 7/8 length that Burda suggests. If you don't mind me saying, I think you should either make them full length pants or just cut these off and make them long, cuffed shorts that hit you right above the knee. You have such a cute figure and these pants aren't doing anything for it. I can't wait to see your finished project.

I think the shorter one is the best otherwise they look a bit like they shrunk in the wash or you had a growth spurt. But if you really really promise not to get offended I think narrower cropped, 7/8 whatever pants would look better on you.

Karen @ From Scratch said...

I also prefer the right leg of the "medium" length, but you could also pull off the shortest length.

Anonymous said...

I like the shortest version best. It shows off your legs and doesn't make them look short.

Gail said...

Definitely cut them shorter. The middle length is fine, but you have long legs so could go a touch shorter. Wear them with sneakers or a ballet flat. Come to think of it, you don't seem like a ballet flats type of gal!

Sew-Ann said...

Hi I just started reading you!!

I like the last version from the right. Also I think the cuff could be left off.

sewsue said...

With the fuller leg of these, the shorter length looks best IMO. If you are really wanting the 7/8 length, you might try a pant with a closer fit through the hips and legs. I think they would create a better look proportionally speaking. I definitely agree with the others about the careful choice of shoes and top to really create a fashionable, rather than frumpy, look.

i'd do shorter and wear some nice wedges with a bit of height. I think the longer ones look off -- but then I go against the grain in most things.

Medium length looks great.

I haven't been following because I've been moving so maybe I missed it but what is the T-shirt pattern you are wearing? I love it!

verobirdie said...

Personnally, I'd go for the shortest version: if you don't crop them short enough, it will look as if you made a bad hem.
But in any case, I would go with the length YOU are comfortable with. With your size, you can wear any length you like. In my opinion.

Paulette said...

Go shorter....like mid-calf. See how you feel about that. Also, I don't think the pants are flattering with the pleats. It seems to add too much bulk for your tiny frame.

Sue said...

The longer ones look like the Burda pics but I like the photo of the shortest version best as it makes your legs look slim.
I am 5'3" and I am wary of making 3/4 pants too. I usually only wear them to gym as I have to shorten the full length ones!

BConky said...

Wow the back of those pants fit great. I like the shorter length but I'm an old geezer so probably shouldn't ask me.

I really like picture number two!
You have a great blog here!

Here are my 2 cents:
I like the medium length best, so far, considering it's supposed to be a 7/8 length. It seems to be the most flattering without changing the style of the pants completely by going too short - you'll end up with 3/4 length, or even pedal pushers.
I would try, though, taking out a bit of width around the leg in the front. The back looks fantastic, but in the front, esp. around the crotch, there seems too be too much fabric (maybe caused by position of pleats), making the pants look a bit baggy and therefore in proportion to its length too boxy. Does that make sense?
If you look at the style picture you'll see the difference of width/length ratio is greater, resulting in a longer rectangle, read: longer, taller, slimmer legs - more flattering.

If you're going to wear them with flat sandals, then I would go shorter. One or two inches below the knee would be best. You have long slender legs, so you can even get away with mid-calf. If you are going to wear heels, then I would go with what you're calling medium length rather than your "shorter length" It looks more current.

Nancy in A2 said...

I like the longest version - just above the ankle bone. I think part of the problem with assessing the length is that the cuffs need to be pressed really flat. Also, you have a tiny waist and taking the width of the pant legs in a little bit would help with the overall proportion.

You've had lots of comments on this one! :D But I want to vote too because now I feel left out. I vote middle picture. I like your right leg best.

Nancy in A2 said...

One more comment - you can always go shorter.

I actually like the riskier lengths better than the safer ones!
