Burda 08-2009 #113 Knit Dress

It's a pretty little dress. It's very casual but I could see wearing it to work. This is Burda 08-2009 #113. It should have been pretty easy but I couldn't figure out Burda's directions for the front/side/back facing bit. In the end, I left off the facing. More on that below. I don't like how I get that little muffin top effect over the waist. I did cinch up about 2" of additional fabric into the neckline to get rid of the muffin top. It almost worked.

Here it is with no belt. I think I like it with the belt better.

I told you that I left off the facings. Instead I folded over all the edges and either zigzagged them or hand stitched them down. I wound some thread up in my other sewing machine so I'm using the Necchi and I really like it. The bodice front is lined with swimsuit knit. The gathered section is pulled up and over and catch stitched to the lining. The arms, back, and hem were simply folded under and zigzagged. My Necchi does the best zigzag in the world. To support the neckline, I first zigzagged on a piece of clear elastic. Then, I folded the edges over and zig zagged again. On the gathered section, I zigzagged on the elastic and then hand sewed it down. I meant to take pictures of that part but them forgot.

If the muffin top really annoys me, I will take it apart at the waist and take out fabric from the bottom of the bodice. Part of the problem is that this fabric is heavy and stretchy so the bottom of the bodice pulls down the top.

You're too thin to worry about a muffin top! The dress looks very chic and expensive, you did a fabulous job!

"Blouson" darling, not "muffin-top" :)

No muffin top at all. It looks fabulous on you! Just perfect. You did a great job of crushing the velvet. Still can't figure out how you do all of this!

Looks fabulous!! Like it best with the belt - nice shades!

And yes, like Susan said, "blouson" I am the one with muffin top.

I'm laughing at the comments concerning the muffin top! Seriously though, I think the model in the Burda photo has the same thing going on if you look closely. It's just that she is raising one arm so the fabric goes up a bit on that side. How about a thicker belt, or is the fabric too heavy and bunchy around the waist?

You look great in this, and I like it better with the belt. Love the texture on the velour. Great shoes too :-))

I like your creativeness! I would never have thought to crush my own velvet! Cute dress and extra fabric does not mean "muffin top"....that term is reserved for body flesh! :) You look fabulous in your dress!

Oh... this is the style that I wore to death in the early eighties! we called that muffin top "blouson". Don't tell me it is coming back in style!
Your interpretation is just lovely and you wear it well!

That is such a cute dress & you could always put in a waist stay to help the top from pulling down at the waist. I really like the style & colors. It is so flattering on you. Great job as ususal.

I've left the same comment on PR, but I like the "muffin-top", it makes it more casual and softer looking. But maybe in the velvet it feels "off"? The belt is a definate "yes".

Did you do the zipper? And is 16" really necessary? Or could I get by with a 7-9" ?
