Burda 07-2009 #104 Shirred Shirtdress

I finished this shirt dress a few days ago but haven't gotten to show it to you because of school and the race and all the other hectic things happening in my life.

I thought it was okay, but boring, in the magazine. Then I saw Christina's version and fell in love.

I bought this really fun fabric from the Fabric and Notions coop. It's a beautiful silky cotton print. There is no stretch and I think it's 100% cotton. I had to carefully cut it so that the golden colors stayed near the hemline.

I really like the waist runching.

Near the waist, three buttons are close together. I really like it but, boy, is it a loud dress.

I did not do the petite adjustment that I normally do. My body has been doing some changing and I'm not sure if I'm just standing straighter or if something else is going on. I don't really seem to need that adjustment anymore. I did change the cuffs so that they are folded up and tacked. You are just supposed to fold them but I didn't want them coming down all the time. I left off the welt pockets because I didn't want to break up the fabric.

The dress looks great! I also really like the runching. Would you do that again? I want to know more about it!

It really looks so much better with some colour! Great job, love that shirring.

p.s. I totally hear you about unfinished jackets mocking you every time you enter the sewing room. That's why I had to finish mine tout de suite, I'm doing a tailoring course next weekend and I'll be sewing another fitted jacket .. couldn't bear the chorus of 2 unfinished jackets.

OMG I have that same fabric! I've been wondering what to do with it since the print layout is so unusual. It looks great as the shirred waist dress.

What a great style for that fabric! I would have had great problems choosing what to make with it, although it is such fun! That will certainly be a dress to cheer you up if you ever need it :-))

I agree that the version in the mag looks like nothing - yours looks far from that :-)

Great dress. Those colours are very bold and need a simple design but some structure. I love your red shoes...cheers Dorothy.

I actually think it's possible that Burda, after inflicting 80s baggy armholes on us 15 years beyond their time, has finally caught on and is now making more properly fitted armholes in their recent patterns. That's been my impression at least (and I'm tall). So it may not be you at all...

It is a bit loud, but that's a very good thing :-). Think of it as interesting.

Love it!

Your version is far, far better than Burda's. It looks comfy too, and the shirring gives a nice fit without being too binding. How did you do the shirring, anyway?

That is really cute, seems like a good dress for work.

The dress looks wonderful. Re: not needing the petite adjustment - try measuring your height to see if you grew. I've done that three times in my adult life and am now 1 1/2 inches taller.

That is one great dress and it looks wonderful on you. I love a good shirtwaist look and this is quite a modern take on that style. By the way: the dress is NOT too loud, it is more color than you are used to; and you ARE standing straighter--I was going to talk to you about your slouch, but now I don't have to.

OK, it's a little loud, but the HAPPY COLORS are what makes it so nifty!

Have you been walking around with a book on your head? That's what my mother would make us do as children to ensure good posture. It works.Us petites have to grab height any way we can!

I LOVE this dress, the color, the print, the pattern. It all works so well together.

Very lovely dress! So nice to see that fabric come together in such a nice pattern. Good Job...now I have an idea about what to do with my piece of that hiding in the dungeon!
