Wish me luck.

I just have to get in one more grueling hike before school starts in 10 days. It's 26 miles and there's river crossing which could be scary. Hopefully it won't be bad this time of year. We will be doing it in two days so I'll be pooped when I get back. I'll take lots of pictures and hopefully none of them will be bear photos. I've decided not to carry a gun because (1) it's heavy, (2) there are three of us, and (3) it's not easy to holster a sidearm when you have a full pack. It's likely we will run into one (or two or three) because it's berry season. Hmmmm, now I'm talking myself into carrying one again. I'll sleep on it and we'll see how I feel about it in the morning. I'll be offline for a few days so I'll answer any emails when I get back to walking normally again. :)

OMG. I've been watching the Alaska Experiments shows off/on and now you're actually doing it in real life. Definitely good luck (and safety) wishes!

You are one of the most interesting people! So exciting living up there in the north country-I've only dreamed of such adventures...you live them. Good luck on this one. Be safe too!

Have fun and be safe!

I'm curious--are you going to park a car at the end of the trail and hike to it? or are you going to go 13 miles turn around and hike out? Sigh. It's been so long since I've been hiking. Have a great time!

I'm totally paranoid about bears whenever I'm in Alaska (every dark lump is a bear to me!) My husband gives me a hard time about it but he shouldn't!

My daughter was hiking with a friend of ours when they ran into a mama bear and baby on the trail as they were coming down from Mt. Hope. My friend had lost her bear mace earlier in the week. They gave the bear wide berth (baby went up a tree which probably made mama a bit happier) and made it down in one piece. And my bear paranoia remains intact!

People say it's scary in the Australian bush because of snakes, but all we have to remember is to not step on them. Bears are a whole different story! Travel safely and have a wonderful time!

She sews, she has children, she runs, and now we find out she faces down bears! Incredible. Seriously, Dawn, have fun, take lots of pictures, and be very careful. I'd take the gun -- but I would not have a clue how to use it. You might be better informed!

From sewing a dress to shooting a bear??!! Well, of course, I hope you won't have to shoot anything but I am awestruck that you so casually mention that you may or may not carry a gun - also that the reason for not taking it is the weight!!??**##

Hope you have a great and safe trip, how exciting :-))

I'm with the others. Carry the weapon! Consider it an additional workout that you don't need. lol

Seriously, huh? Be careful and take the gun. You said you had been lifting weights, anyway, right?

I'm sitting here smiling to myself thinking "Only in Alaska", but I guess each region's wilderness has it's hazards. When hiking around here, I'm always afraid of snakes!
Good Luck to you anyway!!
Love your attitude!
