Gifts for my son . . .

He'll be five (five!!) next week. I made him a new jacket out of my favorite Jalie jacket pattern #2212. I've made this in many sizes and this is a size K. I'm not planning on doing a review on this because I've done one at PatternReview.com. In fact, this was my very first review at PatternReview!! This is that wonderful Windstopper Polartec 300. It is totally windproof and water resistant. It has a wicking side (black) and a water-shedding side (hunter green).

The only thing I did differently to this version is to add my tag and add a hanging loop. I'm always on my kids to Hang Up Their Stuff but then I realize they can't because their coats have no loops!

I decided on re-usable gift bags with octopuses on them. He loves the ocean. I used the Lunch Sack Tutorial (it's on the right under favorite tutorials) and changed the dimensions. I added snaps to mine.

Are all boys into building things?? My son will spend three straight hours with the instruction book and put together these Bionicle things. He loves anything that has directions he can follow. He likes directions. Love them. He likes having A Plan. He's already pretty type-A for only being five. I am planning on these bags being the Bionicle's home after he opens the boxes.

Tomorrow is sewing class day! I'm hoping to cut out my wool. Yikes!

Awesome jacket!!! And I love the gift bags too. I giggled about the type A comment. My daughter's 2nd grade teacher pulled me aside one day and said, "Um, you know your daughter has a type A personallity, and you are really going to need to watch her so she doesn't burn out." I said, "She is in SECOND grade!"

But boy was she right....type A through and through (she's 27 and owns/runs a very successful production company now)......so get ready -- you are probably right.

Great! My son is six and will wake up early just to have time to quietly work on Lego. He would love to have some good instructions

He is also not into creating unique art. When he was two or three he would freeze up at the easel. I finally caved (despite my education training) and copied off some pages from a colouring book. He loved it. A framework! Spaces to fill!

Now he is into copying (freehand)and tracing other pictures and then colouring them.

On another note, I just purchased that pattern (and three others). It is on its way to me now!

My boy will be five on the 24th. Doesn't time go by quickly?! Great gifts!

This is a serious question - when do you sew? You have a young family, work, chase bears and neighbours, your husband is away - so when do you sew? And another serious question, do you enjoy wearing what you make or is it more the making that you really enjoy? Your output is very impressive! Well done.

Hi Dawn, I've been lurking around your blog for a few weeks now, and have jumped out of lurkdom to tell you...I think building things is a boy-thing. My 11 year old loves Bionicles and Lego in generalstill, as his bedroom attests.
BTW, love the blog.

Little boys and their toys! Instructions equals reading and that's always a good thing.

Nice job on the jacket and gift bag! One of my boys was a lot like your son at 5. Now he's an engineer, writing the instructions, and smiling just like he did at 5. Happy Birthday to your son!!

Cute bag ideas! Happy bday to your son--5th birthdays are huge in this house!
Very impressed with your son's skills assembling Bionicles! I don't have the patience to put those creatures together with my little guy!!

Love the bags. What a great way to give a toy with a built in carry case. Jacket looks great.
