More on the knockoff

Yesterday I decided I would knockoff this HP dress. It's the Metropolitan Good Times Top, Tunic, and Dress. Here's the line drawing from HotPatterns.

Check out this Simplicity pattern. It's got the yoke, the gathers, and everything. This is one of the few Simplicity patterns I was going to buy a few weeks ago. But, of course, they didn't have it in my size. Now, I'll have to track it down. It's purty darn close. We'll see what I decide to do.

I still have a ton of hand stitching to do on my couture jacket before tomorrow so I'll be scarce today. Although I do want to review the J. Sterns top I made yesterday.

And I know a bunch of you asked what Hot Patterns emailed to me. I don't want to trash them. Suffice it to say it wasn't all that nice and I'll probably never buy a Hot Patterns pattern.

That Simplicity pattern looks like a great starting point for your knock-off. I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turns out!

You are certainly entitled to your opinion and to express it how you choose.

Anxious to see what fabric you will use.

I've been thinking about the whole idea of knockoffs and I don't think it is ok to completely appropriate someone else's pattern and publicly skite about it. A singer can't sing a song in public without paying the composer the royalty. Why should sewers have different rights to any other artist. A knock is a knock. We all do it at times, but we shouldn't gloat in public.

Technically this isn't a knock off because she is sewing the Simplicity pattern. Perhaps she will be inspired by the HP pattern and make some changes "inspired" by the HP line drawing. Which is no more than any other pattern drafter, designer does all the time! To use anonymous' analogie it's like a singer taking a melody from a song, adding new words and singing it in a different style. Just my two cents.
